Neonatal Update 2017 Young Investigator Awards
The 2017 Young Investigator Award has been won by Dr Cheryl Battersby, a neonatal trainee currently working at St Thomasí Hospital, London. Her research interests centre on improving newborn outcomes through the use of routinely recorded data to resolve uncertainties.
Cherylís PhD focused on necrotising enterocolitis (NEC) and she led a two-year prospective population study (UK Neonatal Collaborative NEC Study) using data extracted from the National Neonatal Research Database (NNRD). This study provided for the first time population incidence and outcomes of severe NEC in England. She developed a gestational age-specific case definition for NEC and investigated feed-related risk factors of NEC. She has collaborated with the East of England and NHS England on other regional and national projects using routine electronic data to evaluate quality improvement programmes and inform health policies.
In addition, Cheryl has a strong interest in newborn care in developing countries, and is currently extending her work to low resource settings.
