Chaired by Professor Christoph Lees, this comprehensive practical foundation course gives access to hardware for scanning simulation over one week.

This course ideal for O&G trainees, specialist midwife sonographers, and anyone starting their scanning career and working towards their RCOG qualification. It follows on from the Obstetric Ultrasound Foundation Theory Course. To meet the registration requirements you need to have completed the Theory Day.

As part of this course, you will take home a personal compact OPUS ultrasound simulator for one week during which you will work through ultrasound training modules, mapped to the RCOG basic competencies such as performing basic biometry (AC, HC and FL), CRL measurement and placental location. The modules will be supported by two evening virtual sessions with Professor Christoph Lees.

You will need to pick up the Simulator from the Imperial College London’s Hammersmith campus on Monday 21st February 2022 and then return the simulator on 28th February 2022. A £50 refundable deposit will also need to be left which will be returned to you upon return of the simulator.

Course Dates:

  • Monday 21st February 2022 – Pick up simulator from Imperial Hammersmith campus
  • Monday 21st and Thursday 24th February 2022 – Evening (6pm – 7pm GMT) – Sessions via Zoom
  • Monday 28th February 2022 – Return simulator to Imperial Hammersmith campus

Registration Fee: £225

System requirements:

  • A Windows 10 computer or laptop
  • Internet access as the courses are accessed via the Cloud
  • Admin access as you will need to install the simulation software
  • Please note the software cannot be installed on Imperial College / Imperial NHS Trust computers and it is not Mac compatible

Delegate criteria/Information:

  • To register you will need to have completed the Obstetric Ultrasound Foundation Theory Course, the next date for this will be in May 2022
  • You will need to be able to travel to West London on the dates specified to collect and return the simulator.
  • A £50 refundable deposit will also need to be left which will be returned to you upon return of the simulator.

The simulation system can only run on Windows, unfortunately, it is not compatible with Mac OS.  Please note you will need to install the simulation software and therefore will not be able to do this on a hospital computer.

Delegates will collect an ultrasound simulation kit from Imperial Colleges Hammersmith Campus to take home with them for one week in order to work through a range of Ultrasound Modules mapped to the RCOG basic ultrasound curriculum each consisting of a pre-test, tutorial and exercises, and a post test.

The Volutracer OPUS ultrasound simulator is a compact optical simulator that allows the user to scan through ultrasound volumes taken from real patients on their PC/laptop using an ultrasound probe and scanning pad.  Using inbuilt metrics, the simulator evaluates each probe movement and assesses image accuracy as well as providing real time feedback and guidance.

The simulators connect to your laptop or desktop via x2 USBs and allow you to scan through real ultrasound volumes as though you were scanning a real patient. The modules consist of tutorials, explanation videos, probe movements exercises, MCQs and free scans.

There will be a Zoom session at the start of the week with Professor Christoph Lees to introduce delegates to the simulator modules and one towards the end of the week to answer any questions or issues that may have come up during the week.

We anticipate that the course will take approximately one hour per day to complete over the course of the week, the equivalent of 1-day study leave.
